68. Gene Editing

There are many different ways to treat disease, but this show has not yet discussed gene therapy. What is a gene? What is gene therapy? What kind of diseases could be impacted by gene therapy? Let’s learn to be scientifically conversational.

General Learning Concepts

1)     Discussion questions:

a.     What is a gene? What is a defective gene? What is disease?

b.     What is gene therapy? What is a disease that gene therapy could address? Why might one need or want to undergo gene therapy? Why would gene therapy be preferred to another type of disease treatment?

c.      What are some different methods or techniques that individuals can undergo gene therapy?

d.     Why would someone be incapable of undergoing gene therapy twice (eg. AAV therapy)?

e.     Is gene therapy expensive? Are humans “good” at doing it?
