82. Mitosis and Meiosis

A long promised episode! Somehow, cells must become more cells. What are the processes required for reproduction? How are mitosis and meiosis different? Let’s learn to be scientifically conversational.

General Learning Concepts

1)     Discussion questions:

a.     What is a cell? What is the cell cycle? Why would a cell need to cycle? What is the genome and how is it organized within humans? What is ploidy? What is a karyotype?

b.     What is the purpose of mitosis? What are somatic cells?

c.     What is the purpose of meiosis? What are germ cells? What is a zygote? Does meiosis happen in bacteria or archaea?

d.     What are some of these phrases that involve “sisters chromatids” or “daughter cells”?

e.     Is it fair to say that mitosis is “asexual reproduction” and meiosis is “sexual reproduction”?
